COVID-19 (Coronavirus) Study Abroad FAQs

March 12, 2020

Our top priority is to support the health, safety, and security of our students and university community. A dedicated team of university officials and medical experts are continuously monitoring and following recommendations from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), World Health Organization (WHO), and other official sources.

It is crucial that all members of our community vigilantly follow the recommendations from University Health Services (UHS) and guidance from the university.

Texas Global is proactively responding to coronavirus (COVID-19) to protect the health and safety of students abroad.

Effective 3/12/2020:  Cancellation of all Education Abroad Programs

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have made the unprecedented decision to cancel all education abroad programs globally through August 18, 2020 (including spring and summer programs). The CDC has elevated the entire world to level 2.

  • All students on education abroad programs must return home no later than March 30, 2020.
  • All students will be required to self-isolate for 14 days upon return. University Health Services will be contacting students directly, with further information.

To make the flight changes, please contact your airline carrier, travel agency, or International SOS immediately at either of the following numbers (001) 215 942 8059 or (001) 215 942 8478 or (001) 215 942 8226 and provide your UT Member #11BSGC000037.

During this time, it is crucial that we stay in close communication. Information pertinent to academics and finances will follow.   In the meantime, your program coordinator will be in touch and we ask that you please email us at educationabroad@austin.utexas.edu should you have any questions.

Self-Isolation Policy

Students, faculty, staff, visitors, and contractors arriving from a location designated by CDC level 3 travel warning (including airport layovers) are required to self-isolate at their permanent residence or off-campus residence for 14 days. See the self-isolation instructions on the University Health Services website.

Students, faculty, staff, visitors, and contractors arriving from all other locations should self-monitor for 14 days. See the self-monitoring instruction on the University Health Services website.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. I am a parent. How can I help my student? How can I get regular updates?

Due to FERPA, UT Austin administrators must communicate with students primarily. Parents can route their questions through their student who is in direct communication with their program coordinator and can check this webpage and linked resources for updates.

2. My Maymester or summer program has been canceled. What do I do next?

Connect with your program coordinator and they will assist you.

3. What does program cancellation mean for my scholarships and financial aid?

Each student’s situation is unique. If you received a UT scholarship and have not yet used the money, return of the scholarship is required. Rules for non-UT and federal scholarships vary. For non-UT scholarships, contact the awarding organization for details. To determine how your aid will be affected, contact the Office of Scholarships and Financial Aid or Texas One Stop.
