U.S. Worldwide Caution

January 16, 2020

Due to recent world events, UT Austin would like to remind our travelers of the safety and security resources available to them.

Important Resources:

    • Register your travel with the U.S. Department of State’s Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP).
    • Contact International SOS in the event of any small or large-scale emergency by calling 1-215-942-8059. They can find a nearby doctor or hospital, provide you with free counseling sessions over the phone or set you up with an English-speaking counselor in your country, and provide security briefings.
    • Join the International Oversight Committee (IOC) listserv for up-to-date Restricted Regions listings and other important safety and security information.
    • Visit the Global Risk & Safety webpage for various helpful health and safety resources.
    • View the UT Restricted Regions List and related resources.

To receive a free security briefing from International SOS on your destination:

  1. Call ISOS at 1-215-942-8059, or toll free: 1-800-523-6586.
  2. Identify yourself as a UT Austin student (Member ID 11BSGC000037).
  3. Ask to speak to a security expert to discuss travel advice for your destination. Be prepared to take notes.
  4. Review your travel itinerary, and discuss safety/security guidance and any other travel advice.

When traveling, always:

  • Be aware of your surroundings.
  • Keep a low profile.
  • Stay alert in public places such as schools, hospitals, government facilities, places of worship, tourist locations, and transportation hubs.
  • Review and alter travel routes and times to reduce time and avoid predictability.
  • Avoid crowds and demonstrations.
  • Exercise caution when walking or driving at night.
  • Travel with a buddy whenever possible, or let someone know of your plans.
  • Carry proper identification.
  • Review your personal security plans.
  • Monitor local media and nearby U.S. Embassy for updates.
  • Review the U.S. Department of State Worldwide Caution
