Individuals traveling in Singapore should expect heightened security and related travel disruption ahead and during the U.S. and North Korea summit on June 12, 2018.
The meeting between U.S. President Trump and North Korean leader Kim Jong-Un will be held at the Capella Hotel on the resort island of Sentosa. From June 10 to (at least) June 14, access restrictions and road closures can be anticipated around Sentosa and central Newton district. Increased security can be expected around Sentosa and the bridge that connects it to Harbourfront, as well as Newton (including Tanglin and parts of Orchard Road), which have been declared as special event areas.
Both Trump and Kim are expected to fly into Singapore via the Paya Lebar Airbase, which is often used to receive high-profile guests. Short-notice delays are expected at Changi airport as the authorities plan to impose temporary airspace restrictions over Singapore from June 10 through June 14.
Travel Advice
- Anticipate increased security and traffic disruption in central areas of Singapore on 10-14 June. Allow additional time to reach destinations on Sentosa and in the Harbourfront and Newton areas. Where possible, plan routes avoiding designated special zones to minimize inconvenience.
- Carry identification and ensure that you have proper authorization to ease passage through security checkpoints.
- If travelling to Singapore during the summit period, reconfirm transport and hotel arrangements prior to departure, as these services may be overbooked.
- Contact Changi International Airport (SIN) or the relevant airline to ascertain the status of flights. In the event of cancellations, your travel agency will be able to assist with alternative arrangements.
- Do not participate in any protests or demonstrations. Leave the area quickly and calmly at the first sign of a crowd forming.
